Honestly? I’m not a big fan of snowfall animations on websites. However, a festive plugin that does exactly that has spontaneously made its way onto our Advent calendar list.

This plugin by Felix Arntz is called Snow Fall and is so new that it hasn’t even been added to the official plugin directory on WordPress.org yet. However, you can download a working version from the plugin’s GitHub repository.

Unlike almost all the alternatives I’ve encountered in recent years, Snow Fall is no performance killer. It also respects users’ browser settings regarding animations. So, for those who prefer to reduce motion for accessibility reasons or by their personal preference, the snow will never fall.

The plugin is based on a JavaScript component by Zach Leatherman. Felix simply packaged Zach’s code into a WordPress plugin. After installation Snow Fall requires no additional configuration. Once activated, the snow automatically falls on the front end.

Conclusion

A fun little feature for anyone interested in adding a touch of winter to their website. We’ll provide the appropriate link here as soon as the plugin is available on WordPress.org.
